Deccan Chronicle on November 12, 2010 reported that the state consumer commission has awarded 10 lakh as compensation to the wife of a bank manager who died after half a dozen botched surgeries on his intestines at Vijaya Health Centre here. The commission said if the doctor had taken care, Karibeeran’s weight would not have reduced from 76 kg to 34 kg after the surgeries which were performed over a period of 64 days. A commission panel comprising Justices M. Thanikachalam and S. Sambandam noted that the patient was treated at Vijaya Health Centre by Dr Hariharan in October 1996. The doctor was attempting to surgically remove a tumour in the small intestine. However, in November, Karibeeran was readmitted after complaining of severe abdominal pain.
