USA: Doctor arrested and charged for Child Porn

The AlternativePress.com on December 29, 2010 reported that South Orange resident and Summit Medical Group doctor Rocco Martino was arrested this morning on charges of possessing child pornography, according to federal officials. Martino, who specializes in sports and internal medicine in Berkeley Heights, is accused of downloading and posting child porn images and videos.

Daily Times of December 30, 2010 reported that Police on Wednesday arrested a quack lady doctor and seven other persons including three women during raid at a clinic for alleged involvement in sex trade. Spokesman for police said Shehnaz was pretending to run a clinic of homeopath in Ghori Town, Khana Dak. People of the area complained to the police about her alleged involvement in immoral activities.

Malaysia: Doctor jailed for selling new born baby

Winnipeg Free Press on December 29, 2010 reported that a prosecutor says a Malaysian court has sentenced a doctor and his assistant to one year in jail for selling a newborn boy. Prosecutor Dzul Iswari Mohamad Jaafar says a court in southern Johor state found Robert Luk and his assistant Suleiman Salim guilty Wednesday of selling the baby to a couple for 10,000 ringgit ($3,200) in 2005.

USA: Doctor jailed for fraud

Dayton Daily News on December 29, 2010 reported that a federal judge sentenced a central Ohio doctor to a year and a day in prison after he allowed his office manager to stand in for him while he was out of the country. A U.S. District Court judge on Wednesday ordered 60-year-old Charles Njoku of Powell to repay the government more than $131,000 for health care services that were not provided as billed.

USA: Liposuction clinic sued after woman dies

Seattlepi.com on December 29, 2010 reported that the family of a woman who died after liposuction at a Bellevue clinic has sued the clinic and doctor who did the procedure, a month after the state charged the doctor with unprofessional conduct. In May of 2009, 28-year-old Aura Javellana went to the Sono Bello Body Contour Center in Bellevue for liposuction of her abdomen and upper arms. During the procedure, the surgeon, Marco Sobrino, failed to monitor how much Lidocaine he gave her, before sending her home alone in a cab after he was done, state health investigators said. Javellana died in a hotel room the next day.

Singapore: Hospital, doctor sued over teen’s death

The Straits Times on December 30, 2010 reported that the parents of a teenage leukemia patient, who died five days after he was admitted into KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), are suing the hospital and the attending doctor for alleged negligence. The couple are arguing that their son Cao Yuanchi, then 14, should have received appropriate treatment sooner, given how gravely ill he was. The hospital and Dr Chan Mui Yoke, a senior consultant, are disputing the claims and mounting their defense.

Bangladesh: Doctor arrested in drug charges

Dhaka’s executive magistrate Anwar Pasha, aided by RAB members, held Kawser Hossain, 32, a doctor of Special Care and Cancer Hospital at Panthapath, on Monday night with 480 Yaba tablets. Kawser’s associate Delwar Hossain, 30, was also arrested during the drive, RAB-10 deputy director Kismat Haider told reporters.

Uganda: Doctor and nurses held over negligence

New Vision on December 29, 2010 reported that a doctor and two nurses at Apac Hospital have been arrested over negligence. They were arrested last week following the death of a pregnant mother who was reportedly left unattended to. Negligence of duty is a criminal offence under the Anti-Corruption Act of 2009. The suspects were granted Police bond but barred from work as investigations into the death continues. The central northern regional Police public relations officer, Henry Alyanga, indentified the suspects as Dr. Godfrey Kisembo, Dorcus Edwe and Hellen Akullo, both nurses attached to the maternity ward.

USA: Hearing postpones for accused dentist

swrnn.com on December 28, 2010 reported that the detectives said David Martinus Reiakvam, who runs Reiakvam Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, coached gymnastics at a privately owned facility in Riverside and “had an alleged sexual relationship with an … athlete while residing in Riverside.” Because of holiday travel delays, a Temecula dentist was unable to make it to Riverside Tuesday for arraignment on statutory rape and other felony charges, prompting a judge to postpone the hearing to next week. David Martinus Reiakvam, 42, is accused of having sex with an underage girl. He faces one count each of unlawful sex with a minor, lewd acts on a child under 14 and oral copulation of a minor.

USA: Self proclaimed “Nurse of the Year” behind bars

As judicial marshals put handcuffs over her wrists to begin her nine-month sentence, Betty Lichtenstein, 57, mouthed the words “I love you” to her shaken daughter, Monica, sitting in the front row of a Norwalk courtroom.

India: Accused doctor to pay compensation

The Times of India on December 28, 2010 reported that thirteen years after the son of an ex-defence person died due to the negligence of a doctor, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission last week upheld the order of the Maharashtra State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission that directed Airoli-based Dr V C Bendale to pay Rs 2.6 lakh along with 7% interest from the date of filing of the complaint. Bendale appealed against this order in the National Commission. However, stating that “Bendale, having not prescribed the proper medicine with proper dosage, has failed in her duty as a doctor”, the National Commission observed that the “state commission, in our view, has very rightly held her to be negligent”.

India: Three doctors nabbed over molestation charges

The Times of India on December 28, 2010 reported that Shahibaug police station officials have arrested three doctors in connection with a molestation case in Civil Hospital registered almost four months ago. According to police, the arrest was made on the basis of strong corroborative statements made by other doctors and from confessions of the accused in the case. “We have arrested Sunil Jadav, Yogesh Sindhi and Chandrakant Amodra, all resident doctors at Civil Hospital. All of them work in the maternity ward and were held when they appeared before us on Monday morning. We had intimated them to surrender or face arrest,” said VA Rehvar, inspector, Shahibaug police station.

USA: Fugitive physician apprehended in Mexico City

msnbc.com on December 27, 2010 reported that Federal officials are working to extradite a fugitive physician at the heart of a University of California, Irvine fertility scandal in the 1990s, who was arrested last month in Mexico City. U.S. Attorneys spokesman Thom Mrozek says Ricardo Asch was arrested Nov. 3, about 15 years after he and another fertility doctor, Jose Balmaceda, were charged with stealing the eggs and embryos of dozens of women being treated at the UC Irvine Center for Reproductive Health.

Bangkok Post on on December 27, 2010 reported that Police have raided two suspected illegal abortion clinics following the arrest of a former nursing assistant accused of carrying out abortions and serving as a go-between for the clinics for four years. The raid yesterday on 26-year-old Noknoi Pakdilon’s apartment in Soi Kubon 31 in Kannayao district was the latest in a crackdown on suspected illegal abortion operations, co-led by Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit and city police inspector for children and woman’s welfare Sutin Suandokmai.

United Kingdom: Patients wins millions in compensation

The Press and Journal on December 27, 2010 reported that almost £8million has been paid out in compensation to NHS Grampian patients in the last five years, the Press and Journal can reveal. A total of 130 patients have won compensation after suing the health board for negligence or any sort of wrong-doing since 2006, according to figures obtained using freedom of information legislation. In just one year, more than £5million was paid out to those affected by clinical negligence. The figures revealed that in 2006 £133,500 was paid to 26 patients, in 2007 £1,318,262 was paid out to 23 and in 2008 the health board paid out a total of £5,084,142 in 29 cases.

USA: Accused doctor to face more trouble

Aurora Sentinel on December 27, 2010 reported that an Aurora doctor arrested last summer and accused of doling out bogus medical marijuana recommendations can no longer practice medicine amid new accusations he recommended pot for a pregnant woman. The Colorado Medical Board last month suspended Manuel Aquino-Villaman’s medical license pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations he recommended medical marijuana for a pregnant woman.

USA: Hospital pays million in Medicaid fraud allegations

Archbold Memorial Hospital Inc. paid the federal government $13.9 million to settle allegations that it submitted false claims to the state’s Medicaid program, the U.S. Justice Department announced late last week. Between November 2002 and July 2008, the Thomasville, Ga.-based hospital allegedly said it was a public hospital for Medicaid purposes, enabling the institution to benefit from an increase in funds as part of the Medicaid Upper Payment Limit program that strictly caters to public institutions. Public hospitals also receive additional funding through the Disproportionate Share Hospital program, which excludes private hospitals.
