India: Government doctor faces law for allowing private doctor to take his place
The Times of India on May 23, 2011 reported that a senior government medical practitioner at a civil hospital in Ajmer has been charged with allowing a private doctor to treat patients in his name while he was on a research tour abroad. Dr B K Singh of ENT department at the hospital was on research tour to the US from May 10 to July 10, 2007. (TOI has a copy of the government letter dated February 21, 2007, of Singh’s sanctioned leave from May 10 to July 10, 2007 for a fellowship programme in Boston, USA.) During this period Singh, hailing from Ajmer, allegedly allowed the private doctor to treat patients at his home in his name, according to a complaint by two patients, who approached social activists. The patients showed prescription letters reportedly given by Singh during the period he was on tour.
