India: Doctors fined for medical negligence
dnaindia.com on May 24, 2011 reported that in a case of medical negligence, the state consumer commission has asked doctors of a hospital to pay a man Rs3.75 lakh as compensation with 6% interest. The man had accused the doctors of negligence after his wife died due to excessive bleeding following her delivery. Pravina Soni, a teacher of higher secondary school, Panchmahals fell pregnant on September 1995 and the doctors gave her a tentative delivery date for April 30, 1996. On April 18, 1996 Pravina complained of stomach ache and contacted her gynecologist Dr Mihir Shah. Pravina’s husband Divyank Soni, has alleged in his complaint to the commission that the doctor suggested a cesarean operation without properly examining the patient. He allegedly told Soni that it was normal for a woman to give birth a fortnight before the tentative delivery date.
