USA: Nurse sentenced for dispensing painkiller

kansascity.com on June 28, 2011 reported that a Kansas licensed practical nurse has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for diverting prescription painkillers. The U.S. attorney’s office says 37-year-old Denise Carlson, of Riley, was sentenced Monday. She pleaded guilty earlier to conspiracy.

Singapore: Anaesthetist sued for negligence

straitstimes.com on June 29, 2011 reported that a mother of six is suing the anaesthetist who was in attendance at the Caesarian birth of her last child in 2006. Ms Joanne Tong, 39, charges that as Dr Gordon Yau was negligent while inserting a breathing tube down her airway ahead of the Caesarian, he ‘erred in his duty of care’ and ‘overstrained and/or injured her neck during the procedure’.

United Kingdom: Doctor struck off for hitting patient

bbc.co.uk on June 28, 2011 reported that a doctor who kicked a patient suffering from autism in a Norfolk residential home has been struck off by the General Medical Council (GMC). The GMC panel found Dr Robert Bartosik, 47, had kicked the male resident, in his 30s, in the rear during a row over a pair of rubber gloves in March 2007. The GMC fitness to practise panel ruled his actions were “unacceptable”.

USA: Accused doctors faces additional charges in pill mill case

wptv.com on June 28, 2011 reported that Authorities filed additional charges against two men who they say bought rubber stamps for their employees who developed hand cramps from writing so many oxycodone prescriptions out of their illegal pain clinics. Pasquale Gervasio, 35, of Parkland, and Richard McMillan III, 38, of suburban Delray Beach, were charged on Monday with racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering, trafficking in oxycodone and trafficking in contraband prescription drugs.

USA: Nurse accused of drug theft

startribune.com on June 27, 2011 reported that the LPN, who allegedly kept two sets of books to hide the drugs, had admitted to stealing narcotics previously. A nurse at an assisted living center in Minneapolis has been accused of stealing painkillers from patients and creating a bogus set of records to conceal the missing drugs. Travis A. Bourbonnais, 35, of St. Paul, a licensed practical nurse for more than 12 years, had previously admitted stealing narcotics from another employer, according to the Minnesota Board of Nursing.

USA: Nurse attempts to kill bed-ridden husband

whas11.com on June 27, 2011 reported that police say a Kentuckiana nurse tried to kill her bed ridden husband by cutting off his oxygen and overdosing him on morphine. Louisville nurse Diane Simpson headed off to the Clark County Jail Monday. She’s charged with neglecting a dependent and unlawful practice of medicine for what she allegedly did to her husband in their Clarksville, Indiana home.

United Kingdom: Nurse imprisoned for fraud

newzimbabwe.com on June 27, 2011 reported that a Zimbabwean man who obtained a £48,000 bursary to study as a nurse has been sent to jail for 18 months, and British authorities are considering revoking his diploma. Marakia Godwin Majoni, 32, from Brighton, admitted seven offences including fraud, theft and possession of false documents at the Hove Crown Court on Monday.

USA: Accused doctor to withdraw guilty plea

posttrib.suntimes.com on June 28, 2011 reported that a Chicago medical lab owner wants to revoke his guilty plea, citing a letter from a Merrillville doctor saying federal prosecutors were coaching him on testimony, according to a filing. Munir Chaudhry says in his motion to withdraw his plea of guilty, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond, that he only agreed to plead guilty because he heard his co-defendant, Merrillville doctor Adolph Yaniz, had agreed to testify against Chaudhry.

ktsm.com on June 28, 2011 reported that on Monday, a disciplinary panel of the Texas Medical Board held a Temporary Suspension Hearing Without Notice and suspended the license of Mauricio Ernesto Jimenez, M.D. of El Paso. The decision comes after the board determined that Dr. Jimenez poses a continuing threat and real danger to patients and the public due to Dr. Jimenez’s lack of competence, impaired status or failure to care adequately for his patients. The suspension went into effect immediately.

USA: Doctor in trouble for taking kickbacks

clarionledger.com on June 29, 2011 reported that a Mississippi doctor has pleaded guilty to taking kickbacks on a private family medical practice in Jackson, FBI officials said. Dr. Earnest Rankin, 64, stipulated before U.S. District Court Judge Tom Lee last week that he and a co-conspirator took kickbacks from Longwind Products and Services, a wheelchair supplier. Rankin said he would recruit Medicare beneficiaries to receive certificates of medical necessity, and he would refer them to Longwind for a power wheelchair. The beneficiaries were not, in fact, medically eligible for the power wheelchairs.

USA: Doctor suspended by health department

sun-sentinel.com on June 28, 2011 reported that a Deerfield Beach doctor has been suspended for his role helping a company peddle imitation Viagra to men who didn’t need it and whom he never examined, state health officials said Tuesday. Dr. David M. Kenton pleaded guilty to a federal felony charge of conspiracy to commit fraud and was sentenced to three months of house arrest in November, federal court records show. The state Department of Health said it is required to suspend him for the fraud conviction.

India: Hospital faces law in uterus removal case

timesofindia.com on June 28, 2011 reported that close on the heels of the Centre demanding full report from the state on the uterus removal cases, an FIR has been lodged against one of the five hopsitals under scanner for alleged uterus damage post surgery. One Mahendra Kumar Saini lodged an FIR against Madhur Hospital alleging that the doctors had carelessly operated upon his wife and damaged her uterus. The man alleged his wife will not be able to conceive again.

New Zealand: Doctor guilty of misconduct

stuff.co.nz on June 24, 2011 reported that the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal has found an Auckland doctor guilty of misconduct and ordered him to pay costs of $65,000. In a report released today, the tribunal found Doctor Christopher Bevan Paltridge prescribed hormone treatment to menopausal women without talking to or examining them. Instead a nurse would carry out the duties.

United Kingdom: Health department denies plea for renewal of doctor’s license

greenwichtime.com on June 27, 2011 reported that the state Department of Public Health has denied a Greenwich physician’s request to have his license reinstated, despite the state Medical Examining Board ruling last month that the doctor, a registered sex offender, could resume his practice under certain conditions. Dr. Clifford Berken, 57, of Stamford, pleaded guilty in February 2010 to a charge of attempting to disseminate indecent material to a minor after he engaged in sexually explicit online conversations with undercover officers posing as a teenage boy. Berken was arrested when he attempted to meet the boy in White Plains, N.Y., and was instead confronted by police.

United Kingdom: Nurse and care worker found guilty for negligence

bearsdenherald.co.uk on June 28, 2011 reported that a nurse and a senior care worker who covered up a fall which led to the death of an elderly patient at a Somerset hospital have been spared jail. Senior nurse Euphemia Ntintili, 54, and senior care assistant Alfug Andom, 38, were caring for Colin Lewis, 75, when he fell from his bed, suffering a bruised head and broken hip, in March 2009. Ntintili ordered Andom and a second care assistant, Elwira Koziel, not to tell anyone about what had happened because they would get into trouble and could lose their jobs, Bristol Crown Court heard. It was eight days before Mr Lewis received hospital care and he died at Weston General Hospital from complications after contracting pneumonia. Ntintili and Andom were found guilty of wilfully neglecting Mr Lewis after a two-week-trial at Bristol Crown Court.

Australia: Doctor banned after patient’s death

moorabbin-leader.whereilive.com.au on June 28, 2011 reported that the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has released reasons why it banned a former Bentleigh doctor from practising for a year. Carl Radford George Jansz (pictured) received the ban for professional misconduct at practices in Brighton and Bentleigh (“GP suspended”, Leader, June 15). Eight charges, six of unprofessional conduct and two of professional misconduct, were brought by the Medical Board of Australia after complaints from a woman’s family. Neither the woman nor her family can be identified. The report found that, during 1999-2007, Dr Jansz continually prescribed medications to the patient including morphine, Diazepam and barbiturate Phenobarbitone. The woman’s original attendance was for abdominal pain.
