United Kingdom: Doctor unable to stop victim’s family from speaking out

birminghammail.net on July 27, 2011 reported that a negligent doctor has failed in a renewed bid to silence the Midland family of a pensioner he killed with an overdose of painkillers as he was treating him for kidney stones. An appeal court dismissed efforts by Dr Daniel Ubani to stop Rory and Stuart Gray speaking out about the Nigerian-born medic’s history. David Gray, aged 70, died when Ubani gave him ten times the recommended dose of the painkiller diamorphine as he treated him for kidney stones at his home near Cambridge in February 2008. Ubani tried to use the legal system in Germany, where he continues to practice, to stop Mr Gray’s son’s – Cradley Heath GP Stuart and Rory, a mission control engineer at the European Space Agency, near Frankfurt – calling for him to be banned.

Steven Bradshaw, 33, had an alleged affair with a Civil Aviation Authority colleague but after she found he was married, he said he would “get her sacked”, the General Medical Council heard.

USA: Bogus doctor sentenced for misconduct

Smith, the medical technician who was convicted in March of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old Hilltown woman under the guise of giving her a breast exam, was sentenced in Bucks County Court Wednesday to six months to two years in county prison. County Judge Jeffrey Finley rejected Smith's request for probation, saying Smith showed a lack of both remorse and understanding about his crimes. "To say the least, you are an odd individual with a warped perspective of yourself and reality," the judge told Smith. "You presented yourself as a medical professional so you could grope this woman. You used the aura of being a medical professional for your own purposes."

USA: Doctor apprehended over sex charges

kimt.com on July 27, 2011 reported that a man arrested for failing to register as a sex offender appears to be a doctor working at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. Kasey Kevin Clowe, 31, is listed as a doctor in the Family Practice Residency Program. According to Minnesota Court Records, the man arrested was convicted in 2002 of 5th degree non-consensual sex contact. Clowe was arrested yesterday in Mason City, but is no longer listed as in custody on the Cerro Gordo County jail inmate report website. According to the Cerro Gordo County Assessor’s website, the address Clowe gave to authorities when he was arrested is property owned by Mercy.

USA: Insurance fraud scheme – 3 chiropractors charged

nj.com on July 27, 2011 reported that three New Jersey chiropractors were arrested today on charges of paying individuals known as “runners” to track down people involved in car accidents and recruit them to undergo chiropractic treatment. The chiropractors, and eight others charged for acting as runners, allegedly conspired in two separate schemes to attract more than 100 patients for treatment and then bill claims to insurance companies, according to the Attorney General’s Office. The state’s “anti-running statute” makes it illegal to use runners to direct patients for medical care when a doctor intends to file insurance claims. The runners allegedly used the state's open records law to obtain accident reports and find victims, Attorney General Paula Dow said at an afternoon news conference.

USA: Doctor suspended in two states for misdiagnosing children

stltoday.com on July 28, 2011 reported that a autism doctor who operates clinics in St. Peters and Springfield, Ill., has been suspended in two states for alleged mistreatment of children. Dr. Mark Geier has been accused of misdiagnosing children with early puberty and treating them with high doses of Lupron, a drug used to suppress the hormone testosterone. Geier operates autism treatment clinics called ASD Centers in at least eight states. Maryland, his home base, suspended his license in April. Washington state followed a month later. A doctor who is disciplined in another state is also subject to discipline in Missouri and Ilinois.

USA: Kidney dialysis providers accused in whistle-blower lawsuit

dispatch.com on July 27, 2011 reported that one of the nation’s largest providers of kidney dialysis deliberately wasted medicine in order to reap hundreds of millions of dollars in extra payments from Medicare, a former clinic nurse and a doctor say in a whistle-blower lawsuit. The lawsuit says that the Denver-based company, DaVita, used larger-than-necessary vials of medicine such as Zemplar and Venofer, knowing that Medicare would pay for the unused portion if it were deemed unavoidable waste. Zemplar contains a man-made form of vitamin D and is used to treat overactive parathyroid glands; Venofer, which contains iron, treats anemia. DaVita, which treats nearly a third of the nation’s dialysis patients, denies the allegations.

USA: Nurse to face law for forgery and aiding in prescription fraud

journalgazette.net on July 27, 2011 reported that a registered nurse at a Warsaw doctor's office has been charged with forgery and aiding in prescription fraud. Jakayla L. Snodgrass, 23, of Leesburg, is accused of supplying others with false prescriptions taken from pads at her employer's office, according to a statement from the Warsaw Police Department. Police said she was arrested Wednesday on the felony charges, which they said involved an attempt to buy Roxicodone, a derivative of the Oxycodone painkiller, by Thomas D. Calhoun, 28, of South Bend, who has been charged with forgery and attempted prescription fraud.

USA: Cop testifies in accused doctor’s case

appeal-democrat.com on July 27, 2011 reported that a former Sutter North Medical Group physician "certainly did" smell of alcohol after a May 2010 accident on Highway 99 that left a woman injured, a police officer testified Wednesday in Sutter County Superior Court. Ifeyani Charles Igwegbe is charged with causing injury by driving under the influence of alcohol, a felony. His jury trial is expected to last at least through Thursday. Igwegbe's attorney, Michael J. Khouri, said outside the courtroom that evidence will show Igwegbe was not driving under the influence. Prosecutors said Igwegbe's blood alcohol content was .13 percent – but the blood tested was someone else's, according to Khouri.

USA: Suspended plastic surgeon faces additional charges

pe.com on July 27, 2011 reported that a former Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who is already under investigation for a patient death has also been accused of grand theft and living in America illegally. Dr. Ehab Mohamed was arrested by Los Angeles police in a sting the involved the attempted sale to a spa of a piece of leased medical equipment for $20,000, district attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said Wednesday. Mohamed pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of grand theft and attempted grand theft on Tuesday. He was arrested at his Encino offices on Friday, Gibbons said. Bail has been set for $1 million and a preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 3.

USA: Couple sues hospital over injuries

wvrecord.com on July 26, 2011 reported that an Athens, Ohio, couple is suing Cabell Huntington Hospital after they claim an area with wet floor caused injuries. On July 17, 2009, Cherry J. Dixon was at Cabell Huntington Hospital when she was caused to slip and fall as a result of a wet floor, according to a complaint filed June 24 in Cabell Circuit Court. Dixon claims the hospital failed to remedy the situation and failed to warn her of the condition.

USA: Doctor’s license suspended by state medical board

dispatch.com on July 26, 2011 reported that the state has suspended a Columbus doctor's license because of his work at a pain-management practice on the city's Far West Side. The State Medical Board of Ohio sent a notice to Dr. Daniel H. Brumfield Friday that outlined allegations that he was trying to circumvent a new state law aimed at shutting down so-called pill mills. "I think it's a bogus charge," said Brumfield, who worked at Ohio Medical West, 108 N. Murray Hill Road. He declined further comment. A message left at the practice was not immediately returned.

Dr Abdul Razzaq Qazi had applied for a position with Ashton, Leigh and Wigan NHS Primary Care Trust (ALWPCT) but failed to inform the trust that he was facing charges which he was eventually struck off for. Dr Qazi was struck off from the General Medical Council’s list of approved doctors following a tribunal in Manchester.

USA: Physician to pay $238K in medical malpractice lawsuit

beckersasc.com on July 26, 2011 reported that Samara Moore, MD, has agreed to pay $238,000 in a medical malpractice lawsuit that accused her of delivering negligent care, according to a Southeast Texas Record report. Earlier this year, the estate of a now deceased patient filed a lawsuit against Dr. Moore and Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, Texas, alleging the providers failed to deliver timely medical attention to the patient who had sepsis.

Ireland: Surgeon struck off, found guilty of misconduct

independent.ie on July 26, 2011 reported that a woman who became gravely ill following a breast augmentation procedure spoke last night of her relief after her plastic surgeon was struck off the Medical Register. Italian plastic surgeon Marco Loiacono (35) was struck off yesterday following a Medical Council recommendation in May of this year. A fitness-to-practise committee had found Dr Loiacono guilty of misconduct on a number of charges in relation to his treatment of Kate Murray (26), of Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin. The committee found Dr Loiacono failed to provide Ms Murray with adequate post-operative care.

Cambodia: Doctor charged with child sexual abuse

phnompenhpost.com on July 26, 2011 reported that United States national Phillip Bruce Shepard, 68, was officially charged yesterday by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court with purchasing child prostitution. Shepard, a doctor at Princess Clinic in Phnom Penh, was arrested on Saturday by anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection police at his home in Chamkarmon district’s Boueng Keng Kang III commune. Director of Phnom Penh’s anti-human trafficking and juvenile police Keo Thea said Shepard was charged in connection to the sexual abuse of two brothers, aged 13 and 16.

USA: Doctors and others charged over investigation of drug orders

pittsburghlive.com on July 27, 2011 reported that an East Liberty clinic ordered thousands of weight-loss pills over a five-year span, prompting an investigation that led to charges against three employees and a former nurse, authorities said on Tuesday. "It's an appetite depressant and it's being ordered by an abortion clinic, so that raised a red flag," said Lauren Bozart, spokeswoman with the state Attorney General's Office, which joined the Drug Enforcement Administration in investigating the Allegheny Women's Center on North Highland Avenue. The state charged Dr. John Barrett, 41, of Mt. Lebanon and Dr. Alton Lawson, 72, of Point Breeze with three counts of prohibited acts by a medical practitioner. Karen Kane, 63, of Penn Township in Westmoreland County and Mark Wagner, 48, of Swissvale face conspiracy and drug charges. All four were being processed in the Allegheny County Jail yesterday, Bozart said.
