Pakistan: Fake doctor booked for giving wrong injection

nation.com.pk on November 28, 2011 reported that a 35-year-old man, father of four, died due to alleged criminal negligence of a quack, who administered him a wrong injection. The incident occurred in Hanjerwal police precincts on Sunday. Police investigators said Saiful Malook, a resident of Town Ilaniawali Mosque, was sick for a couple of days. He was shifted to Dr. Zahid’s clinic. “After examining the patient, the doctor advised his assistance to administered him an injection, which further deteriorated his situation,” a family member told reporters.

USA: Accused doctor pleads not guilty in drug fraud charges

tricities.com on November 28, 2011 reported that not guilty, that's the plea entered today by a doctor that used to head up the cardiology department Johnson City Medical Center. He's accused of prescription drug fraud. Doctor William Allen Walker has been the subject of a Johnson City Police Department investigation for seven months. Walker faces 34 counts of obtaining narcotics by fraud. The investigation started when Johnson City Police began looking into people who were getting the same prescription over and over again. After several months of investigating, Detective Frank Peters says they traced the prescriptions back to Doctor William Walker…former Chief of Cardiology at JCMC.

USA: Doctor to spend 17 years in prison over illicit sexual conduct

wkyc.com on November 28, 2011 reported that a doctor who federal prosecutors say traveled to the United States to have sex with a child will spend the next 17 years in prison. A federal judge sentenced Peter Beichl, 50, to 211 months in prison on charges of attempted sex trafficking of children and a count of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. Beichl had previously pleaded guilty to the charges. According to investigators, Beichl intended to engage in sex with a sedated 11-year-old girl and videotape the incident. "The details of this defendant's case shows the lengths people will go to commit these unspeakable crimes," Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio said. "We will work cooperatively and vigilantly to protect our most vulnerable."

USA: Nurse accepts drug tampering allegations

kansascity.com on November 28, 2011 reported that a Kansas nurse admitted today to diluting morphine solutions at a Salina nursing home in a deal that could send her to prison for three years, federal prosecutors said. Melanie Morrison pleaded guilty in federal court in Topeka to one count of consumer product tampering and one count of adulteration of a drug in a case involving drug thefts in February at the Holiday Resort Nursing Facility in Salina. The 25-year-old nurse also agreed to permanently surrender her nursing license and never work in the health care industry again. As part of the deal, prosecutors have asked that Morrison be admitted to a drug addiction treatment program which, if she completes it successfully, would allow her to leave prison early.

USA: Former nurse admits wrongdoings in drug charges

knoxnews.com on November 28, 2011 reported that a former nurse who authorities say stole prescription drugs from more than a half-dozen nursing home residents pleaded guilty to drug-related charges Monday. During a hearing before Grainger County Circuit Judge Richard Vance, Karen Perryman Webb, 49, of White Pine, Tenn., pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, according to a Grainger County Circuit Court clerk. Sentencing is set for March 26.

Canada: Gynecologist faces discipline committee over unprofessional conduct

ottawacitizen.com on November 28, 2011 reported that an Ottawa gynecologist has been called to appear before a professional discipline committee to answer allegations that she approved prescriptions to patients without having met or examined them. The unprofessional conduct allegations levelled against Dr. Joyce Buckley by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) relate to the years 2005 to 2007, when she worked in Watertown, New York. In September 2008, Buckley had her New York State medical licence revoked for “gross negligence.”

USA: Doctor gets 10 years imprisonment for corruption, health-care fraud and pain pill trafficking

freep.com on November 28, 2011 reported that Gwendolyn Washington, a doctor and sister of convicted scammer Sherry Washington, was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for a host of crimes including public corruption, pain pill trafficking and health care fraud. Washington, 67, of Southfield, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Paul Borman. She had pleaded guilty to the various crimes earlier this year. In March, she pleaded guilty to her role in a scheme that bilked more than $3.3 million from the cash-strapped Detroit Public School by over-billing for a sham wellness program. Her sister, gallery owner Sherry Washington, was sentenced to seven years in prison for her role and is appealing.

Canada: Doctor accepts prescribing high dosages of drugs

therecord.com on November 28, 2011 reported that a Waterloo pain specialist admitted Monday that he prescribed patients higher dosages of narcotics than are allowed under guidelines of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Frank Loy told a judge that he exceeded the guidelines to reduce the suffering of patients in chronic pain. The college has said doctors should not prescribe more than 200 mg a day of narcotics, Loy testified at the drug trafficking trial of William Haldane, one of his patients. However, for many patients, that’s not enough, Loy said. “The morphine-equivalent dose of 200 mg, that’s too low for very severe pain,’’ said the doctor who was barred by the college from prescribing painkillers last April. “For the benefit of patients, I’ve exceeded the guideline.’’

Canada: Ex-nurse accepts wrongdoings in sexual assault case

Eric James Christiansen, 49, was handed a six-month conditional sentence at what was to be the start of his trial in provincial court in St. Albert on Monday. He also will be on probation for three years. Christiansen was charged with six counts of sexual assault earlier this year after RCMP received complaints from four women.

Dr. Conrad Murray's sentencing Tuesday for involuntary manslaughter is the final step in the criminal case launched within days of Jackson's unexpected death in June 2009. Prosecutors want a judge to sentence the 58-year-old Murray to the maximum four-year prison term. Defense attorneys counter that Murray already faces a lifetime of shame and diminished opportunities and should receive probation.

USA: Chiropractor charged for alleged sexual contact with two female patients

bnd.com on November 11, 2011 reported that a Granite City chiropractor was charged Thursday with two counts of misdemeanor battery for allegedly making "inappropriate, sexual contact" with two female clients. Dr. James T. Phillips, 56, of 724 Falcon Hill Trail, O'Fallon, Mo., was taken into custody at his office at 2339 Pontoon Road in Granite City. The company's website lists the office's name as Phillips Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Center. The Granite City Police Department investigated two incidents: A 33-year-old woman reported March 14 that Phillips made "inappropriate, sexual contact with her during a session at the office" and a 22-year-old woman reported a similar encounter on Sept. 22, according to police.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, 60-year-old Doctor Emmanuel Feuerwerker and his partner, 69-year-old Lise Pouliot, defrauded the federal health care plan of more than $620,000 with more than a hundred fraudulent claims for physiotherapy.

USA: Nurse accused of stealing medicines from patients

news.cincinnati.com on November 22, 2011 reported that a nurse at Alois Alzheimer Center is accused of stealing medication from her patients. Peggy Ballinger, 55, of Liberty Township, was booked into the Hamilton County jail just before midnight Monday. She faces two counts each of theft, deception to obtain dangerous drugs and illegally processing drug documents. When Ballinger appeared in Hamilton County Municipal Court Tuesday morning, Judge Melissa Powers said she could remain free on her own recognizance. The case will go to a grand jury for possible indictment on Dec. 6.

India: Top doctors suspended for giving shelter to murder suspect in hospital

khaleejtimes.com on November 28, 2011 reported that three senior doctors from the prestigious city-based Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), medical superintendent Dr Nimma Satyanarayana, deputy medical superintendent Dr Sarat Prasad and cardiologist Dr Sarat Chandra have been suspended for allegedly allowing a double-murder accused person to stay in the hospital for a prolonged period on grounds that he needed treatment. Jairam Reddy, brother of Congress legislator Adinarayana Reddy, along with the others was arrested and remanded to judicial custody in Kadapa Central Jail. However, he allegedly feigned illness and managed to shift himself to NIMS in connivance with the jail authorities, and managed to stay in the hospital for 43 days, from September 21, 2010, to November 2, when he was actually fit for discharge.

USA: Psychologist's license suspended over sexual relationship with patient's mother

sun-sentinel.com on November 26, 2011 reported that a Margate psychologist has had his license suspended and must undergo treatment as a result of allegations that he had an improper sexual relationship with the mother of a 16-year-old patient. In May 2009, a Broward civil jury ordered that Dr. Michael Walczak pay the woman, Pam Gustin, nearly a half-million dollars over the same matter. Gustin, 53, said the mental-health professional enticed her into a nearly two-year sexual relationship, then dumped her, leaving her suicidal and psychologically scarred. Walczak, 61, who practiced in Margate and lives in Boca Raton, denied the sex allegations at trial. They were friends until Gustin expressed deeper feelings, he said. Upon rejection, she went into a tailspin and then set out to ruin him, he said.

USA: Man files negligence lawsuit against nursing home seeking $6 million

lehighvalleylive.com on November 27, 2011 reported that a Frenchtown man claims negligence by a nursing assistant at a Lopatcong Township health facility left his mother in a permanent vegetative state. The claims were made against Genesis Healthcare Corp.'s Lopatcong Center in a Nov. 17 lawsuit filed by an attorney for David Rosario in U.S. District Court. Rosario seeks $6 million in damages for claims that the nursing assistant left a cleaning brush in his mother’s tracheotomy. Multiple calls for comment to a media representative for Genesis Healthcare, based in Chester County, Pa., were not returned this week.
