Canada: $4 million lawsuit filed against hospital and doctors in patient's death
vancouversun.com on December 12, 2011 reported that the family of a 37-year-old woman who died days after gastric bypass surgery at The Ottawa Hospital has filed a $4-million negligence and malpractice lawsuit against the surgeons and the hospital. Lisa Ehrenholz's is the first known death at The Ottawa Hospital's surgical bariatric program. The suit was filed on Nov. 15 at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa. "According to the medical records, Dr. (Joseph) Mamazza reviewed the gastric bypass procedure with Lisa and discussed possible complications such as bleeding, infection and anastomotic leak but he failed to discuss and document the actual rates of each of these possible life threatening complications with her.
