India: Negligence case filed against hospital in wrong blood group transfusion case
hindustantimes.com on December 18, 2011 reported that a case of death due to negligence was registered against Jaslok Hospital on December 14 at the Gamdevi police station for the death of Deepti Makhijani, 21, who was undergoing treatment for blood cancer at the hospital. Makhijani's family alleged she died after hospital staff used the wrong blood group for a transfusion on December 8. However, doctors at the hospital have cited a complete organ failure as the cause of death. The family wants the police to file a case of murder. "We have roped in medical experts to substantiate valid evidence. Depending on the findings of the probe, we will decide if murder charges have to be pressed," said Anil Khumbhare, deputy commissioner of police (zone 2).
