courant.com on January 17, 2012 reported that a state medical board on Tuesday accepted a consent order that fines a doctor at St. Francis Hospital $5,000 for irradiating the wrong side of patient's mouth 29 times before the error was caught. Had the Medical Examining Board not approved the agreement between the state Department of Public Health and Dr. Richard Shumway, the matter would have gone to a hearing. Shumway, 53, was treating the patient for a recurrent mass on the right side of the mouth. The radiation was directed at the left side of the mouth.
