USA: Doctor, 4 others charged in $1.2 million Medicare fraud

nbcbayarea.com on February 11, 2012 reported that a San Francisco doctor and four other people have been arrested on federal charges of carrying out a $1.2 million Medicare fraud in claims for wheelchairs that were not needed by patients, U.S. prosecutors said this week. U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag said Dr. Edna Calaustro, 68, of San Francisco, two medical supply company owners and two alleged recruiters of patients were arrested Thursday and made initial appearances in federal court that day. The five defendants are each accused in a federal grand jury indictment of one count of conspiracy to defraud the federal Medicare program and 10 counts of health care fraud.
