courier-journal.com on February 17, 2012 reported that the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure issued an emergency order Thursday suspending a Lexington doctor accused of knowingly doling out pain pills to drug-seekers. The board forbid Dr. Najam Azmat, who is also the subject of a criminal investigation, from practicing medicine in Kentucky after a medical consultant concluded that Azmat organized his practice in Lexington “to maximize fraud and abuse,” knowingly prescribed narcotics to out-of-state drug-seekers and was guilty of “unethical and criminal behavior.” The consultant, Dr. Jeffrey Berg of Louisville, was hired by the board to the board to review records of 21 of Azmat’s patients.
