silive.com on February 21, 2012 reported that a disgraced Staten Island eye doctor pleaded not guilty today to charges he lied about being rendered sexually impotent and unable to perform surgery with his left hand after a car crash, according to a report in the New York Daily News. Joseph Mermelstein, 56, who is already in federal prison for a Medicare fraud scheme, wore prison clothing during his appearance at Brooklyn Federal Court, according to the report. Dr. Mermelstein collected millions in insurance claims after the Oct. 2003 accident, after, authorities allege, he faked his injuries when the insurance companies’ doctors examined him.
