Angela Phiri, aged 49, allegedly left her shift before it finished at Northfields Nursing Home, Roebuck Road, Crookesmoor, Sheffield – despite knowing the woman was unwell and needed urgent treatment. She is alleged to have claimed she didn't ‘want to spend a minute longer at the home' than she had to. The Nursing and Midwifery Council heard night shift nurse Alyna White took over from Phiri on April 17, 2009 – and phoned for an ambulance after discovering the patient lying in bed covered in vomit. “When I went into Patient B's room, I found her unconscious on her back in bed,” she said.

USA: Doctor prevented from practicing for a year

At the hearing, the state outlined its case. “I asked him if he had taken the hydrocodone and he admitted that he did. He said he took it for back pain,” investigator Gary Ricks testified. “He said he had an old prescription for lung cancer.”

USA: Doctor pleads guilty in kickback scheme

wyckoff.patch.com on May 18, 2012 reported that a doctor from Franklin Lakes admitted in federal court Friday that he took cash payments in exchange for patient referrals, the US Attorney's Office in New Jersey said in a release. Dov Rand, 47, who practices in West Orange, pleaded guilty to one county of violating the federal healthcare anti-kickback statute, US Attorney Paul Fishman said. Rand and 12 other New Jersey doctors were arrested in December and charged with accepting envelopes of cash from Orange Community MRI, a diagnostic facility in Orange, according to the release.

USA: Doctor held for driving while intoxicated

kxxv.com on May 19, 2012 reported that the McLennan Co. Jail's inmate doctor spent some unwanted time with his patients after he was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Dr. John Arthur Wells, 61, was stopped by Waco Police Thursday night in his vehicle and then arrested for DWI. Police have no further information at this time because they are still finishing the police report. Dr. Wells contacted us and stated that he is a relatively new diabetic and that played a role in his arrest. According to the McLennan Co. Sheriff's Office Wells has worked at the jail for approximately two years.

United Kingdom: Accused doctor denies wrongdoings

General practitioner Rejendra Kokkarne is accused of watching sport on the internet and using his office computer for personal internet banking while prescribing 10 times the normal dose of morphine sulphate to Beryl Barber, 78, and Eric Watson, 86. But taking the stand at Leeds Crown Court, Kokkarne, of Fulmar Way, said he prescribed morphine as other pain medications were unsuitable.

USA: Doctor charged with sexually assaulting a patient

toledoblade.com on May 17, 2012 reported that a Mercy Memorial Hospital doctor, accused of sexually assaulting a patient, was arraigned today in Monroe County District Court. Dr. Abdullahi A. Mohamed, 58, of Dearborn Heights, is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct – one being a felony and one a misdemeanor. He is being held in the jail in lieu of a $100,000 cash bond. Authorities said that, on Saturday, a 26-year-old woman reported that she was sexually assaulted by her psychiatrist while at his Stewart Road office, according to Michigan State Police.

wkyc.com on May 17, 2012 reported that an Akron-area doctor resigned from Akron General Medical Center following allegations of sex scandal that has now cost her an indefinite suspension of her medical license Dr. Amy Weidman claimed that the sexual contact she was having with a uninsured male patient whom she gave free medical care was simply an extra-marital affair, but state investigators found that it warranted an indefinite suspension of her medical license. Weidman, 51, resigned from Akron General Medical Center, where she was listed as “teaching faculty” after the hospital learned of the investigation.

USA: Doctor caught with a prostitute and cocaine

krqe.com on May 17, 2012 reported that a prominent New Mexico doctor found himself in a compromising position Wednesday after Albuquerque Vice detectives caught him with a prostitute and cocaine. Dr. Richard Lieberman has quite a resume. According to his bio, he is the founder and director of Urgent Care Santa Fe. He also started medical clinics in Espanola, Los Alamos, Taos and Las Vegas. Before that he ran the emergency room at St. Vincent Regional Medical Center and served as the chief of staff at the hospital. Lieberman is also the medical director for the Santa Fe Ski Patrol, and has a ski run named after him.

United Kingdom: Doctor charged with possessing child pornography

Singapore: Doctor guilty of professional misconduct

A Disciplinary Committee Inquiry found Dr Chai Chwan, 47, guilty of 31 charges of misconduct. The Singapore Medical Council said on Thursday that the Inquiry proceedings arose out of two complaints by the Ministry of Health. One was on August 10, 2007 about Dr Chai's practice at Little Cross Family Clinic in Tampines. The other was on April 30, 2008 about his practice at My Little Family Clinic in Jalan Bukit Merah. The SMC said Dr Chai faced a total of 71 charges. The first group of charges related to the way he managed patients who had been prescribed Subutex. He faced a total of 49 charges – 27 were for patients seen at Little Cross Family Clinic and 22 for patients seen at My Little Family Clinic. Another set of charges revolved around financial schemes.

USA: Doctor pleads not guilty to 96-count fraud indictment

waff.com on May 17, 2012 reported that a doctor facing charges appeared before a federal judge Wednesday afternoon for an arraignment hearing. Dr. Diana McCutcheon is charged with fraud. She appeared in federal court with her attorney, Robert Tuten. McCutcheon pleaded not guilty to the 96-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court. She's accused of billing Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare for non-reimbursable cosmetic skin treatments totaling $1.3-million. "Dr. McCutcheon is convinced this is a paperwork mix up. It is easy to mix up numbers and transpose a number on a code. It could practically invalidate the entire bill. She believes that is what's happened here. She is certainly willing to repay any money she was wrongfully paid and she does not deserve," said Tuten.

South Africa: High Court judge finds hospital guilty of negligence

looklocal.co.za on May 15, 2012 reported that justice Kathy Satchwell of the Johannesburg High Court found several acts of negligence by Edenvale Hospital that led to Prudence Khumbula’s daughter, Tanya, being brain damaged and paralysed during birth. The Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, has been ordered by the court to pay R12-million in a medical negligence case. “Last year the Gauteng Department of Health lost all 10 medical negligence cases in court, and had to pay out R19,9-million,” said Democratic Alliance Health spokesperson for Gauteng, MPL Jack Bloom. “So far this year R15,5-million has already been paid in two cases.

Singapore: Eye doctor settles medical negligence case out of court

Dr Marc Tay Tze-Hsin, 51, will pay the patient, Ms Song Lee Shen, 42, an undisclosed sum of money without admission of liability on his part. Ms Song, who is in the IT industry, sought treatment from Dr Tay in November 2007 to correct her vision. He carried out evaluation tests on her eyes to determine if she was a good candidate for Lasik surgery.

USA: Medical researcher faces criminal charges

Zinnanti, a prolific medical researcher, in the hospital laboratory or behind bars. A prison term is on the table for Zinnanti, a former Hershey resident and a graduate of the Penn State College of Medicine, after a criminal charge was filed against him Monday in U.S. Middle District Court in Harrisburg. The charge stems from allegations that a now-defunct Hershey-based business Zinnanti owned, Zinnanti Surgical Design LLC, supplied surgical devices that federal investigators contend were not sterile. Zinnanti, 42, now a pediatric neurology fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine in California, has a tentative deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to a charge of introducing adulterated medical devices into interstate commerce. The count carries a penalty of up to 3 years in federal prison, plus a year of probation and $250,000 in fines.

Dr. Kishore Kumar Jadhav is facing federal charges that he employed and videotaped nude teenage girls. New details were released about the alleged crime, and we want to warn you that some information in this story is graphic and viewer discretion is advised. The details are startling, some so graphic that we chose to leave out portions of the sworn statement by an FBI agent. The ten page statement centers around Dr. Kishore Jadhav who worked in Manchester at a private family practice for years, but now he is accused of employing teenage girls and producing child pornography. "Everybody that I knew that went and saw him, nobody had anything bad to say about him. It's just a big shock to everybody around here," said James Jeffrey. He never saw Dr. Jadhav, but was getting ready to take his daughter there. "I have an eleven year old daughter, and this is scary to think a person of trust like that. Where do you turn?" said Jeffrey. The investigation started in March with a complaint to Kentucky State Police that Dr. Jadhav paid two teenage girls to take a survey.

South Africa: Doctor fined, suspended for unprofessional conduct

iol.co.za on May 15, 2012 reported that a Durban anaesthetist, who was charged with unprofessional conduct for failing to monitor a patient who subsequently died, has been fined R50 000 and immediately suspended from practice for an effective three months. Leon Rheeder pleaded guilty before a conduct committee of the Health Professions Council of SA on Monday. The committee suspended him from practice for one year, with three months of it effective immediately. The remaining nine months was wholly suspended for a period of five years, provided Rheeder was not found guilty of a similar offence in that time. Rheeder was expected to appeal against the sentence. He had been monitoring 70-year-old patient Ian Fordyce during a cataract extraction operation at Crompton Hospital in Pretoria in February 2010. But he left the theatre to relieve himself and Fordyce had an adverse reaction to the drug Ultiva and slipped into a coma.
