kjct8.com on May 19, 2012 reported that an Eagle County doctor accused of inappropriate contact with a child has been acquitted of all charges. Alfred Bamberger, 75, was accused of touching the child during a treatment session at a wellness center in Edwards. He was subsequently charged with three counts of sexual assault.

United Kingdom: Nurse faces professional misconduct hearing for leaving an ill patient

Angela Phiri, aged 49, allegedly left her shift before it finished at Northfields Nursing Home, Roebuck Road, Crookesmoor, Sheffield – despite knowing the woman was unwell and needed urgent treatment. She is alleged to have claimed she didn't ‘want to spend a minute longer at the home' than she had to. The Nursing and Midwifery Council heard night shift nurse Alyna White took over from Phiri on April 17, 2009 – and phoned for an ambulance after discovering the patient lying in bed covered in vomit. “When I went into Patient B's room, I found her unconscious on her back in bed,” she said.

kfor.com on May 17, 2012 reported that Dr. Bruce Gilmore appeared before the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision Thursday to once again answer allegations of drug abuse and putting patients at risk. At the hearing, the state outlined its case. “I asked him if he had taken the hydrocodone and he admitted that he did. He said he took it for back pain,” investigator Gary Ricks testified. “He said he had an old prescription for lung cancer.”

USA: Suspended doctor charged with health care fraud and illegally dispensing drugs

A criminal information filed Thursday charges Diana Carver with health care fraud and illegally dispensing drugs. Such documents typically are filed with the consent of the defendant and indicate a plea deal has likely been reached in the case. A current phone number could not be found to reach Carver for comment.

USA: Doctor pleads guilty in kickback scheme

wyckoff.patch.com on May 18, 2012 reported that a doctor from Franklin Lakes admitted in federal court Friday that he took cash payments in exchange for patient referrals, the US Attorney's Office in New Jersey said in a release. Dov Rand, 47, who practices in West Orange, pleaded guilty to one county of violating the federal healthcare anti-kickback statute, US Attorney Paul Fishman said. Rand and 12 other New Jersey doctors were arrested in December and charged with accepting envelopes of cash from Orange Community MRI, a diagnostic facility in Orange, according to the release.

USA: Doctor held for driving while intoxicated

kxxv.com on May 19, 2012 reported that the McLennan Co. Jail's inmate doctor spent some unwanted time with his patients after he was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Dr. John Arthur Wells, 61, was stopped by Waco Police Thursday night in his vehicle and then arrested for DWI. Police have no further information at this time because they are still finishing the police report. Dr. Wells contacted us and stated that he is a relatively new diabetic and that played a role in his arrest. According to the McLennan Co. Sheriff's Office Wells has worked at the jail for approximately two years.

USA: Doctor jailed for embezzling state’s birth-injury fund

timesdispatch.com on May 20, 2012 reported that a Petersburg-area doctor whose license was suspended in 2009 was sentenced in federal court Friday to 30 days imprisonment in connection with his theft of money from the state's Birth-related Neurological Injury Compensation Fund. A federal-state investigation found that Dr. John E. Crews III, 41, embezzled about $17,000 from the program by submitting invoices for the purchase of handicapped-accessible vans at inflated amounts. He supplied two vans to the program but received payments from the program for five. He will have to forfeit $64,000. The scheme was aided by a former program claims manager, Iris Allen, who is now serving 10 years in federal prison for embezzling nearly $1 million from the program.

USA: Two ‘Pill Mill’ operators indicted

bizjournals.com on May 18, 2012 reported that two Dayton pain clinic owners have been indicted on charges that they operated “pill mills” in the state, fueling prescription drug addictions. A federal grand jury Wednesday returned an 11-count indictment against John Randy Callihan, 54, of West Portsmouth, and Christopher Stegawski, 62, of Cleveland for allegedly selling prescriptions for controlled substances at the former Eastside Medical Specialist clinic in Dayton, which in 2010 moved to Lucasville where it operated as Lucasville Medical Specialist and later Tri-State Medical. Stegawski, who received a medical degree in Poland in 1977, represented himself as a chronic pain management doctor at the Dayton and Lucasville clinic and an unnamed clinic in Southpoint.

It was an emergency the California Medical Board says couldn't wait. “We need to move quickly, this man is not acting properly,” said Dan Wood, California Medical Board Spokesman. An experienced obstetrician was immediately suspended because they say he is hooked on inhalants. “A situation we felt was dangerous enough that we felt he could actually possibly harm somebody,” said Wood. The doctor is 56-year-old Peter Hickox, who worked at Lodi memorial and P. Gill Medical Group, until a janitor uncovered his potentially dangerous secret. More than a year ago, Hickox was allegedly hooked on what are known as poppers, chemicals used to clean video cassette players.

General practitioner Rejendra Kokkarne is accused of watching sport on the internet and using his office computer for personal internet banking while prescribing 10 times the normal dose of morphine sulphate to Beryl Barber, 78, and Eric Watson, 86. But taking the stand at Leeds Crown Court, Kokkarne, of Fulmar Way, said he prescribed morphine as other pain medications were unsuitable.

Dr Sudam Munde was arrested by the district police yesterday. The victim had four children kids, all of them girls. She reportedly wanted her fifth baby to be a male child. When her sonography reports suggested that she was pregnant with a girl child, she approached Dr Munde to get an abortion done.

USA: Doctor gets 3 year probation, fined for professional misconduct

democratandchronicle.com on May 18, 2012 reported that a family medicine doctor in Gates has been placed on three years probation and fined $15,000 by the state Department of Health after admitting to negligence on more than one occasion. Dr. Vu Tran of Tran Family Medicine, 1770 Long Pond Road, no longer can prescribe controlled substances. The probation is a stay of a three-year suspension of his license. During this time, Tran may practice only when he is monitored by a physician who is board certified in family medicine. The penalties take effect May 24, according to the Board for Professional Misconduct. Tran has been licensed to practice in New York since July 2001. He will continue to practice medicine during the probation, according to a statement from his attorney, Richard S. Tubiolo.

USA: Doctor charged with sexually assaulting a patient

toledoblade.com on May 17, 2012 reported that a Mercy Memorial Hospital doctor, accused of sexually assaulting a patient, was arraigned today in Monroe County District Court. Dr. Abdullahi A. Mohamed, 58, of Dearborn Heights, is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct – one being a felony and one a misdemeanor. He is being held in the jail in lieu of a $100,000 cash bond. Authorities said that, on Saturday, a 26-year-old woman reported that she was sexually assaulted by her psychiatrist while at his Stewart Road office, according to Michigan State Police.

wkyc.com on May 17, 2012 reported that an Akron-area doctor resigned from Akron General Medical Center following allegations of sex scandal that has now cost her an indefinite suspension of her medical license Dr. Amy Weidman claimed that the sexual contact she was having with a uninsured male patient whom she gave free medical care was simply an extra-marital affair, but state investigators found that it warranted an indefinite suspension of her medical license. Weidman, 51, resigned from Akron General Medical Center, where she was listed as “teaching faculty” after the hospital learned of the investigation.

pharmacychoice.com on May 16, 2012 reported that Local dentist Dr. Carlos Armin Morales-Ryan, 45, and his wife, local orthodontist Dr. Nelia Patricia Garcia-Morales, 42, have pleaded guilty to a criminal information admitting they made false statements on bills to Texas Medicaid, United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced today. Morales-Ryan and Garcia-Morales owned and operated Orthogenesis International Centre, a Laredo dentistry and orthodontics business, and a substantial portion of their business was targeted to rendering services to Medicaid-eligible children. Applicable Texas law and Medicaid regulations required them to be in their offices when services were rendered on Medicaid patients as a prerequisite to receiving payment for the services from Medicaid. Similar consumer protection laws and regulations are applicable to most types of physicians for many of the services they render in Texas, regardless of whether the patient is or is not a Medicaid beneficiary.

USA: Ex-nurse faces charges of criminal negligent homicide

reporternews.com on May 17, 2012 reported that a former registered nurse with the Abilene State Supported Living Center was charged with one count of criminal negligent homicide Thursday, nearly three years after allegedly not informing medical personnel of her client’s deteriorating condition. Deborah Ann Gant, 58, of Abilene posted a $5,000 bond and was released from the Taylor County Jail on Thursday, custody records say. Gant had worked at the center about a month before the accusation, according to court records. Court documents say Gant failed to inform medical personnel of the deteriorating condition of patient Mario Martinez, who died Oct. 20, 2009.
