thechronicleherald.ca on February 01, 2012 reported that the licence of a Halifax child and adolescent psychiatrist has been suspended on an interim basis. The Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons announced the measure against Carlo Glorioso Carandang on its website today. An interim license suspension is sometimes put in place while a complaint investigation is taking place, said college spokesman Bruce Thorne. “This happens when an investigation committee believes that a doctor may be incompetent or guilty of professional misconduct or conduct unbecoming, and that it’s in the public interest to suspend the doctor’s license before concluding its investigation,” Thorne said.

Canada: Doctor reprimanded for breaking ban of prescribing narcotics

thechronicleherald.ca on January 17, 2012 reported that a Halifax family doctor has been reprimanded for breaking a restriction on her licence that banned her from prescribing narcotics. Erica Gilliatt wrote the prescriptions between 2005 and 2011 while providing physician services at Halifax-area nursing homes, says a reprimand announcement on the Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons website. Her narcotics prescriptions for nursing home residents, who were patients of other doctors, were picked up by the province’s prescription drug monitoring system.

Canada: Doctor prohibited from writing prescriptions for patients

enfieldweeklypress.com on October 11, 2011 reported that the Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons has handed down punishment to a Middle Musquodoboit doctor for using a patient to get narcotic drugs. Dr. Violet Hawes has been permanently prohibited from writing out prescriptions for any narcotics and she must advised her patients of the prohibition as well as post a notice of the same in her office, the college announced in releasing their decision on the matter Oct. 3. Hawes had her license suspended by the college in Nov. 2009 after allegations of wrong doing surfaced. A month later one of her former patients, Doug Carpenter, committed suicide outside the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, leaving behind a note that blamed Hawes.

Canada: Yarmouth psychiatrist’s license revoked
